Slow start this year. My boat Rene and Dan Clague’s boat came up from Padstow on the 17th May to start fishing. By the end of May, I had thirty pots at sea and we were starting to see the ‘blues’ in some quantity. Blues are a nickname for lobster. Brown crabs remain thin on the grounds although Spider crabs were plentiful at the start of the season and particularly when using fresh bait. Pollack are now regarded as a species under threat and have not been seen much although mackerel are about and there have been several baskets brought ashore. The leisure boats were slower to arrive but by the beginning of July all the moorings were in use, and it is pleasing to see the harbour being used. We could do with a settled spell.
