An interview with Ray, owner of The Toby Jug, this is the first in a series of interviews with Boscastle business owners.
What made you come to Boscastle?
We knew we wanted to start a new business somewhere really special and had been looking around Cornwall. My better half Nicki and I came to visit Boscastle just for a day out. As we sat by what we now know to be Jane’s Lawn eating our Cornish pasties we saw Pirate Dan in full pirate dress walking his horse along the path. I felt this place had a really great feeling and obvious character. I knew from that moment that this was the right place for me. There’s a feeling about Boscastle that is hard to put in to words. It’s a special place. It seems to know what you need almost like it’s alive.
How would you describe The Toby Jug?
It’s a place where visitors and the whole Boscastle community can come in and be treated as friends whether we know them or not.
What or who inspired you to start the business?
Nicki. It was her idea. She has a real love for Cornwall. We were staying in Polhu Cove when I realised it was what I wanted to do as well. A defining light bulb moment. It enabled us as a family unit to all come down and build a new life and business together.
What is the role your business plays in the local community and why is that important to you?
It’s not just a business. It’s somewhere we, the community and visitors can come every day, see old friends and meet new friends. We were welcomed in to the community at a time we needed it having never run a business like this before.
What are your successes in the business?
Being able to open up for the second year of trading and looking forward to opening up for a third year next year.
What do you enjoy most about being here?
The people and the community. It’s a proper community.
When you are not running the business what keeps you occupied?
Spending time with family and enjoying discovering a bit more of Cornwall. Being able to take the dog for a walk on the beach. We still pinch ourselves at how fortunate we have been to find this special place. I will never get tired of the view as I drive in to work and see Boscastle from the top of the village.
Out of all the products you sell what’s your favourite and why?
I am proud of all of our menu. We try to source as much locally produced food as we can. However my own personal favourite is Farmer Toms ice-cream. Particularly a double scoop of lemon meringue and raspberry pavalova. I do taste it daily – obviously for quality control!!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
This is a family run business. I am extremely proud of the Toby Jug team who work with me. None of this would be possible without team Toby.
