On Mothering Sunday, 30th March at around 12:30 a fire broke out in Moss Rose, a cottage in Fore Street next to the Primary School. Alerted by the smoke, a number of locals ran to check and assist with the first call to the 999 services going out at around 12:40 by which time the rear of the property was seriously aflame and smoke was pouring from windows front and rear.
The first fire engione arrived from Bude around 13:10 with three engines following over the subsequent half hour followed by ambulance and police services. Additional vehicles, including a “cherry picker” arrived later with ambulance and police also in attendance. Local residents had ensured parked cars were moved to allow access for the engines and provided the Incident Manager with what information they could on the property, road access and other local details.
Fortunately, the owner was out for a walk at the time the fire took hold though initially it had been assumed that he was inside the property.
With wind blowing up the hill, we were spared the spreading of the fire to either the school or the gardens behind the property though it appears that there may be some damage within the neighbouring roof space. Damage to the property itself is extensive with fire services still working into the evening to ensure that it is safe.
