With the Easter holidays fast approaching, the RNLI is once again stepping up to keep Cornwall’s coast safe. From Friday 5th April, lifeguards will be back on 20 beaches across Cornwall, ensuring residents and visitors alike can enjoy the sea with confidence.
Last year, RNLI lifeguards and lifeboat crews across the South West saved 69 lives and helped over 12,500 people, with many rescues involving rip currents and inflatable toys swept out to sea. Children and teenagers were among the most common groups needing help.
If you’re heading to the beach this spring, the RNLI is urging everyone to:
🏖 Choose a lifeguarded beach
🚩 Swim between the red and yellow flags
🌊 Check tide times and weather conditions
📞 Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in an emergency
🛟 Float to Live – lie on your back and stay calm if you’re in trouble in the water
Lifeguard cover begins on the following Cornish beaches from 5 April: Crantock, Fistral, Towan, Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth, Tregonhawke ,Widemouth, Summerleaze, Treyarnon, Constantine, Harlyn, Polzeath, Praa Sands, Porthtowan, Chapel Porth, Perranporth, Gwithian North, Hayle Towans, Porthmeor, Sennen
These beaches will have daily RNLI lifeguard patrols from 10am to 6pm, providing vital safety cover through the Easter break and into the spring season.
Cornwall’s coastline is one of our greatest treasures – but it’s also unpredictable. The RNLI’s early-season patrols are essential for keeping people safe as visitor numbers rise.
