Boscastle’s National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) was involved in a successful multi-agency rescue on Friday morning following reports of a swimmer in difficulty near Meachard.
An alert member of the public spotted the swimmer and made the right call — dialling 999 and alerting the coastguard. The coastguard immediately contacted the Boscastle NCI lookout station, where a volunteer watchkeeper was on duty.
The swimmer, who appeared disoriented, was observed surfacing on the far side of Meachard before entering Western Blackapit Bay — a remote cove with no land access.
The Port Isaac inshore lifeboat was tasked to the scene and responded promptly. The crew located and safely rescued the swimmer from the bay. After confirming there was no need for medical assistance, they brought the individual safely into Boscastle Harbour.
Later that day, the swimmer visited the lookout to thank the NCI team in person, leaving a generous donation in appreciation.
This incident is a powerful reminder of the importance of vigilant watchkeepers, public awareness, and the vital coordination of UK search and rescue services. It’s no exaggeration to say that, thanks to these combined efforts, a life may have been saved.
