While it may have seemed quiet on the surface, Boscastle CIC has been working hard behind the scenes to secure the future of our public toilets — and there has been real progress since our last update. But let’s be clear: we will not rest until we have common sense, security, and sustainability.
Firstly, following the May elections, our newly elected Cornwall Councillor, Mark Burnett, is now in office. Mark campaigned on reinstating the car park levy to fund the toilets, and we’ve already written to him to help turn that campaign promise into action.
Secondly, we’ve contacted the new Cabinet Member for Transport, Dan Rogerson, requesting an urgent review of the previous administration’s decision to remove the levy — a move that led directly to the current funding crisis. We hope this new leadership will be more responsive to practical, local solutions that work.
Closer to home, we’re hugely grateful to Forrabury and Minster Parish Council, who have provided a £1,500 grant to help keep the toilets open while a long-term solution is found. It’s a timely and meaningful show of support when it’s needed most.
Finally, we’re proud to have the support of the North Cornwall Community Area Partnership (CAP) — a collective of more than 25 Town and Parish Councils from across the region. They have formally called on Cornwall Council to reinstate the levy and collaborate with communities like ours on shared responsibility models that can succeed.
