Devon and Cornwall Police are warning about a rising scam called SIM-swap fraud – where criminals hijack your mobile number by tricking your phone provider into moving it to a SIM card they control.
Once they have your number, they can intercept calls and texts, access bank accounts, and reset passwords using one-time codes sent by text.
Protect yourself:
- Add a PIN or password to your mobile account with your provider.
- Use authenticator apps or passkeys instead of text message verification where possible.
- Be cautious about what personal information you share online.
- If your phone suddenly loses service or you get an unexpected SIM transfer message – act immediately.
If you suspect you’re a victim:
Call your provider, alert your bank (dial 159), change your passwords, and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
