Boscastle and Crackington Gig Club attended the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly at the beginning of May, entering an Open A, Ladies A and Ladies Supervet crew.
Their racing gig, Torrent, was shipped over to the islands several weeks before the event and was placed on Town Beach on the Thursday afternoon by club members, ready for the racing to commence on Friday morning.
The long race from St Agnes started at noon and saw the Ladies Supervet crew achieve an impressive 17th place in their category. After two more heats, they fought their way into the final, which took place on Saturday morning.
To the delight of the BCGC members following them on tripper boats and on the big screen, they improved their position yet again to finish 10th in the world — a fantastic result while holding their own against the larger clubs.
It was then the turn of the Ladies A crew, who put in a huge effort to climb from Group D to Group C and finish 29th in the world — the highest position ever achieved by a Ladies A crew in the open race.
Next came the Open race and heats, which saw the boys in orange finish a very respectable 42nd out of 132 crews. The crew included two new rowers who only took up the sport six months ago, making it an excellent result all round.
A fantastic club weekend was enjoyed by both rowers and supporters — bring on the summer regatta season!
