Summer reminder: Know how to treat insect bites and stings

As the weather warms up and more people head outdoors, the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board is reminding residents and visitors how to deal with common insect bites and stings.

Most bites and stings from insects such as bees, wasps, mosquitoes and horseflies can be treated safely at home. Washing the affected area with soap and water, applying a cold compress to reduce swelling, and avoiding scratching will usually help relieve symptoms.

Some people may experience larger local reactions, while others can develop an infection if the bite is scratched. Pharmacists can also recommend creams or antihistamines to ease itching and swelling.

However, it is important to seek urgent medical help by calling 999 if someone experiences signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or collapse following a sting.

The advice also reminds people to check for ticks after spending time in long grass or woodland. If you find a tick attached, remove it as soon as possible using a proper tick removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers, gripping the tick close to the skin and pulling it away steadily.

If you’re unsure about a bite or sting, or symptoms become worse or show signs of infection, seek advice from your local pharmacy, GP or NHS 111.

With a few simple precautions, everyone can enjoy Cornwall’s countryside, coast and gardens safely throughout the summer.
