Digital landline switchover: Is your household ready?

The switch from traditional analogue landlines to digital phone services is continuing across the UK, with the existing copper telephone network due to be retired by the end of January 2027.

Most households will be contacted directly by their telecoms provider when it is time to switch. For many people the change will simply involve plugging their existing telephone into their broadband router, while most current handsets will continue to work. In most cases, customers will also be able to keep their existing telephone number.

However, the move is particularly important for anyone who:

  • relies on a landline during emergencies,
  • uses a personal alarm or telecare device,
  • has no mobile phone signal at home,
  • or is aged 75 or over.

Unlike the traditional copper network, digital landlines will not normally work during a power cut unless suitable backup arrangements are in place. Telecoms providers are required to offer free backup solutions for eligible vulnerable customers, including battery backup where appropriate. If you think you or a family member may qualify, it is worth contacting your provider before the switchover takes place.

Residents are also being reminded to be alert for scams. The switchover itself should not result in unexpected charges, and genuine telecoms providers will not contact customers out of the blue asking for bank details or personal information.

If you’re unsure who supplies your telephone service, check a recent bill or bank statement and speak to your provider if you have any questions about how the digital switchover may affect you or someone you care for.
